Overview

About the family

Mabroum is a variable Arabic typeface based on old Kufic, built as a variable font with clean, optimised outlines engineered for today’s high-resolution screens.

The design keeps the geometric backbone of Kufic while softening it with curves — the outlines are simplified enough to render quickly and hold up at small sizes, without losing the calligraphic weight of the original style.

Mabroum is still a beta typeface: it is under active development, and its glyphs, spacing, and OpenType features may change in future releases.

Design concept

  • Variable font — Mabroum supports infinite weight variations, allowing seamless interpolation between thin and bold styles.
  • Simplified and geometric — designed with minimal yet refined outlines that speed up text rendering and improve performance.
  • Optically adjusted — careful attention to spacing and stem heights ensures visual harmony and readability in both large display and small text sizes.
  • Calligraphic integrity — each glyph is carefully derived from the traditional Kufic style, preserving the beauty of Arabic calligraphy.

OpenType features

Mabroum ships contextual Arabic shaping alongside stylistic alternates, letting the family flex between a geometric Kufic register and a softer, more legible one within the same file.
